The energy industry’s transportation sector is under scrutiny as the Obama administration plans to debut new rules that will impose stricter safety standards, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The new regulations, which include set standards for speed limits, brakes and required testing, will be applied to trains that carry fuels including oil and ethanol.  Industry players expect that the changes could cause major gridlock and limit overall shipping abilities.

The increase in attention has been spurred by increasing onshore oil and gas development, most notably in the Bakken/Three Forks Shale play of North Dakota.

The rules will be announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Wednesday July 23, 2014.
