Koch Pipeline Company has given its proposed Dakota Express Pipeline the axe, according to multiple news reports.

As a result, the non-binding open season for the project, scheduled for July 2014, has been cancelled. Plans to build the pipeline, which would have run from the heart of the Bakken Shale play in North Dakota to Illinois, were initially announced in 2013.

While Koch spokesman Jake Reint did not specify on the reason for the cancellation, Shale Experts believes the abundance of existing midstream infrastructure may have played a role in the decision. In Continental Resources’ latest investor presentation, it outlined the robust takeaway capacity available for Bakken Shale operators.
