Viking Play Overview

Also located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, the Viking play is a relatively thin target located in Alberta and Saskatchewan. While it has been an exploratory target since the 1950's, the development of hydraulic fracturing has caused a shift in development strategies for E&P companies. It is estimated that the formation holds 88.7 million m/3 in oil reserves.

Due to enhanced completion techniques, between 2007 and 2012 recoverable reserves in the Viking Formation jumped to ~82 million barrels.

Play Characteristics:

  • Cretaceous
  • Proven Initial Oil-In-Place: ~3.0 billion barrels
