Midland Basin Wolfcamp Overview

The Wolfcamp has been drilled extensively in the more mature Midland Basin and Central Basin Platform via commingled verticals–namely the Wolfberry and Wolffork plays, respectively. The Wolfcamp reservoir is Leonardian (early Permian) in age and because it is deeper than the Spraberry or Dean, the formation was not drilled until later, starting in the 1960s. Early results were inconsistent and early operators struggled with the complex reservoir distribution and abrupt lateral facies changes.

In the early 1990s, companies began to use 3D seismic to map the play, and the well success rate rose materially as a result.  Advances in drilling and completion technology have made the Wolfcamp shale more accessible as a productive reservoir, and the formation’s incremental contribution to Midland Basin vertical wells has spurred a new golden age for the Basin.
