NOV Settles with Former Employee on Racism Suit

According to a report from Fuelfix, National Oilwell Varco was ordered by a Houston federal jury to pay more than $3 MM to a former employee, who claimed he was fired after complaining to company officials of racial discrimination. A settlement was reached for an undisclosed sum.
Manasseh Simmonds, a black man, claimed in his lawsuit that he was fired a week after meeting with managers to complain of a new foreman's "racist and threatening statements," and "ongoing harassing treatment."
Simmonds had received merit raises for the three years before his termination, and co-workers had offered to serve as witnesses for his treatment.
$2.5 MM of the ordered amount was for punitive damages.
