Bakken Drilling Update: Rigs Up 85% YOY as Operators Go Back to Work

Activity in the Bakken has been on the upswing in 2017. Shale Experts Research Group took a look at the latest drilling and rig activity in the play as well as what we can expect for the remainder of the year.

Rig Count by Company (2016 vs. 2017)

As a whole, rigs have increased 85% YOY to 48 (up from 26). Marathon's rig fleet is the largest, with nine currently active.

Only one company we looked at saw a decrease in rig count. Exxon subsidiary XTO decreased its count from three rigs to one in 2017.

Wells Planned

Of the E&Ps above, 10 operators have announced that they plan to drill a total of 581 Bakken wells this year.

These operators are running a total of 34 rigs, or 17 wells per rig.
