Bakken/Three Forks: How Operators Are De-Risking

The Bakken may be the best known unconventional play in the United States. Although it seems to be the focus of North Dakota, the Williston Basin is a stacked play with several benches of focus.
Below the Bakken is the Three Forks. The Three Forks formation is comprised of interbedded grayish-green dolomitic mudstones, pink to tan silty dolostones, and anhydrite. It is sourced by the Bakken and produces in North Dakota and Montana. The Three Forks formation reaches a thickness of 270 feet in McKenzie County, North Dakota. This compares to a 90 foot thickness of the Bakken shale. The 2013 USGS survey recently announced the Three Forks has more recoverable resource than the Bakken. It has 3.73 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil versus the Bakken’s 3.65 billion.
