Frac Market Update, Proppant Growth, Longer Laterals, Frac Stages: Q2 2017

Utilizing the Shale Experts Frac Database, we are taking a look at the U.S. pressure pumping market. We are comparing Q2 2017 vs. Q2 2016 as well as looking at other recent data points including top operators (completions), proppant load per well, and more.
Proppant use has increased noticeably year-over-year. In Q2 2017, there were 49,054,000 tons of proppant consumed versus 32,333,000 tons in Q2 2016 (an increase of approx +42%).
The Utica, Marcellus and SCOOP plays have been the top three (1, 2, and 3, respectively) in terms of proppant consumption for 2017.
Proppant Per well Up Nearly 30% YOYThe amount of proppant per well has also increased. In Q2 2016, the average was 7,721,466 tons per well. In Q2 2017 the average increased +29% to 9,947,305 tons.
