BP Attempting to Lower $13.7 Billion Oil Spill Fine

After being fined $13.7 billion in connection to the 2010 oil spill, BP plc is requesting the fine be lowered as low oil prices continue to plague the industry, according to a report by Reuters.
In support for the bid to lower the fine, the company cited that it 'took extensive steps' to alleviate negative long-term effects caused by the spill.
In an official statement, BP lawyer Mike Brock noted: "There has been no collapse of the ecosystem [as a result of the incident and] BP cannot afford a penalty in the range that they are asking for."
