Colorado's Senate has narrowly approved a bill that will overhaul oil and gas regulations in the state, according to multiple reports.

The Senate voted in favor of the bill (Senate Bill 19-181) by a 19-16 margin that was 100% within party lines - Democrats voting in favor and Republicans voting against.

This development comes a short five months after the state voted against the 'Prop 112' measure, which would have restricted the acreage available for drilling. The approval of this new bill will likely have numerous E&Ps on edge in regard to any DJ Basin development going forward.

The bill is now headed to Governor Jared Polis, who, as a Democrat, will likely vote in favor of the measure.

What is Senate Bill 19-181?

In short, the bill gives Colorado towns / counties and their respective local government bodies more power over the regulation of oil and gas-related activities.

The bill states: "The bill prioritizes the protection of public safety, health, welfare, and the environment in the regulation the oil and gas industry by modifying the oil and gas statute and by clarifying, reinforcing, and establishing local governments' regulatory authority over the surface impacts of oil and gas development."
