The Wolfcamp Shale is an oil and gas formation found throughout the Permian Basin. (See Permian Basin Geologic Break down below.) Historically, development in the Permian has been mostly vertical. In the last few years, however, companies have shifted focus to horizontal development. Specifically in the Wolfcamp A, Wolfcamp B, Wolfcamp C, and Wolfcamp D and, more recently the Wolfcamp XY in the Delaware Basin.
It is important to note that the Wolfcamp Shale (Wolfcamp A, B, C, D) can be found in all three basins, the Midland, Delaware and Central basin platforms at varying depths. The Cline shale was later renamed the the Wolfcamp D.

Wolfcamp Shale - Midland Basin
USGS has confirmed that the Midland Basin Wolfcamp contains some 20 billion barrels of oil, 16 trillion cubic feet of associated natural gas, and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. The estimate comes on the heels on a previous guidance provided by Pioneer Natural Resources CEO Scott Sheffield that the Wolfcamp/Spraberry shale could hold as much as 75 billion barrels (BBOE), which would rank it second only to Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar field.

Wolfcamp Shale - Delaware Basin
Delaware Wolfcamp Shale is a separate formation that lies beneath the Bone Spring, it is about 2,000' thick. (See image below.) The Wolfcamp Shale horizontal developments in the Delaware have been somewhat limited in the northern portions of the Basin with shallower objectives offering stout returns. The Delaware Wolfcamp is largely a horizontal oil play–with the exception of some combined Wolfbone verticals–with a median hydrocarbon mix similar to the Bone Spring at 60% crude, 20% wet gas and 20% dry gas. Most of the activity is currently focused on the Southern Portion (Texas) of the Dealware Basin Wolfcamp.
